What is Drama all about? Shakespeare and the Elizabethan theatre

What´s drama and what elements has it got? Have a look at the following presentation and learn some facts
about this genre.

When talking about drama we have to make a reference to Shakespeare. We are going to learn some facts about his life and production and about the theatre of his own time.

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon. He died on April 23, 1616. This is the portrait believed to look most like him and it is on the First Folio of his comedies, and tragedies. The First Folio was published in 1623, some years later after his death. It is the only realiable text for about twenty of he plays. .
The inscription on the stone beneath his monument reads:
GOOD FREND FOR JESUS SAKE FORBEARE,
TO DIGG THE DUST ENCLOASED HEARE:

BLESTE BE Ye MAN Yt [that] SPARES THES STONES,
AND CURST BE HE Yt MOVES MY BONES

Read the following presentation to complete your knowledge about Shakespeare and his time.

Elizabethan theatre was quite different from what we know nowadays in the 21st century.
Our modern theatres have many poweful eletric lights, the new technologies that make almost everything possible but in Shakespeare times, stages were lit by the afternoon sun and all the effects were created by the actors. (male not female). Women were not allowed on stage.
The audience was very close to the actors and the stage and the drama was quite rhetorical. The way they spoke was very different from what we can see today. This way of speaking was part of the drama itself. It helped the audience have the picture of the stage and enjoy the plot even more, so voice and action were key elements
Theatres were "open-air constructions"and the lower class people could stand on the floor in front of the stage. Wealthy people could buy gallery seats. Today our theatres are enclosed and we can´t sit on the stage or stand up in front of the stage.

Have a look at the following slideshare and see how the audience and actors were placed on the stage.

At the beginning of the play we can see that Shakespeare went to his meeting with the man sitiing in the chair, but he was late.
First, they discussed about the play of Shakespeare and the man said that his play was too long and they needed to made it more short.
The man who was sitting in the chair invented the snappy title, Hamlet.
Shakespeare was desagree with all the changes that the man sitting in the chair, was doing.
Later the man change the famous soliloquie, because he thought that was boring and provoke yawns.
So, this way they invented the phrase:" to be or not to be that is the question", now is more cool because is more shoter or the man sitting thought this.
Shakespeare thought that if he cut one word, the man will be able to take his name off the credits.
Finally they dealt and Hamlet was created.

First we can see that Shakespeare went to meet the man sitiing in the chair, but he was very late.
Then, they talk about Shakespeare's play because the man sitting in the chair didn't like it so he created Hamlet.
Shakespeare didn't want to change anything but the man invented the well-known soliloqui "to be or not to be" that said was shorter and better than the original one.
Shakespeare said that his name was not going to appear in the credits if he canged anything.
Finally Hamlet was created.

In these sketch the director of the play wanted to cut some parts of the soliloquy of Hamlet because he thought that it was too long because it lasted five hours and that is a lot of time for the audience standing up and without toilets. However, Shakespeare thought that the soliloquy was too short, so they tried to cut some words of the soliloquy but Shakespeare thought that the soliloquy without that words was absurd and he said that if they change any word of his soliloquy he would resign.
Finally, they made a deal, Shakespeare could put in back the two cockney gravediggers and the director could change the soliloquy.

In the sketch, Shakespeare goes into a room to meet his editor. They talk about the play ''Hamlet''. The editor says that the play is too long so he tells Shakespeare to take out some parts which are very long, the soliloquies. He tells Williams to take out some words of the famous soliloquy ''To be or not to be''. At first, Shakespeare says that if one word is taken out his name wouldn't appear on the credits but finally, they make a deal and the soliloguy is adapted to the editor's version.

At the beginning of the scene, Shakespeare was late because of the traffic jam. Then they start talking about the play that has a snappy tittle: Hamlet. Also the other actor said that they have a "lenght problem" because it lasts five hours, so that's why he decided to make it shorter using the soliloquies; they invented the most famous phrase, "to be or not to be that's the question", but Shakespeare said that that question has no coherence but the other actor said that's its shorter then he started to removing words of the text. Finally Shakespeare is not agreed with him so they make a deal about he that could put the cockney gravediggers and the other man that could change the soliloquy.
